School Transformation + Development Map
The field of education is complicated. Educational practices vary considerably. Brain research and learning research, plus the values of relationship-building and learning relevance all suggest educational deliveries that are quite different from traditional school practices. The array of possibilities can seem bewildering.
The School Transformation + Development Map was conceived to make the field of education visible. It is a tool to open awareness and stimulate discussion on innovations in education. In it, educational practices and the facilities that support them, are organized in five columns, from Traditional on the left, to Transformed on the right. Each row organizes the possible approaches to critical practice issues in one or several of those five columns. Some practices span several columns.
The ST+DM is interactive. The Excel version creates a score that characterizes educational practices, and one that characterizes facilities.
We use this tool in our workshops. We ask our participants to characterize their school educationally as it is today, and as they want it in the future. We ask the same questions about facilities. When participants put Xs in the space to the left of each item that best describes their school, the ST+DM develops an overall score for educational practices and for facilities.
There are some exemplar schools with educational practices scoring in column 4 or 5. Many schools score their current educational practices in the 2.25 range, but want something near 3.85 for their future. Many workshop participants score their facilities at about 1.85 today, but want their future facilities to be more like 4.15. This “gap” between today and future tells a lot. The bigger the gap, the bigger the transformation from today to the desired future. Pilot projects, professional staff development, and facilities that support new practices are all needed.
